RV WasteTreatments
3 Generations - 4 Groups
In the past, the most common RV Waste Treatments included tank
cleaners, waste digester's, deodorizer's, toilet tissue digester's, gauge sensor cleaners, and drain valve
lubricants.
To date, there has been Three Generations of RV Waste
Treatments available to RVer's.
Be careful of the RV Waste Water Treatments you use in
your RV. Holding Tanks.
Look for Dangerous Chemicals by READING LABELS first.
The Three Generations Of RV Waste Treatments
First Generation RV Waste Chemical Treatments
First Generation RV Waste Chemical Treatments used a variety of chemicals on the EPA dangerous chemicals list,
including formaldehyde, embalming fluids and pesticides.
Most First Generation RV Waste Treatments required 8 ounces per 40 gallon tank.
These RV Waste Treatments generally contained harsh chemicals and deodorizer's designed to kill bacteria
and preserve the wastes until dumped into an RV Sewage Dump.
Many of the chemicals used could also harm septic and waste water treatment systems.
Second Generation RV Waste Chemical Treatments
Second Generation RV Waste Treatments used many of the first generation RV Waste Chemicals, but added caustic
chemicals to their arsenal. Second generation products generally required 4 ounces per 40 gallon tank.
These second generation RV Waste Treatments still create havoc on septic the Septic or Waste Water Systems
receiving RV Wastes. They did a better job of breaking down tissue and solids, but still contain bacteria killing
chemicals and strong deodorizer.
Third Generation RV Waste Bacteria Treatments
Today's Third Generation RV Waste Bacteria Treatments use Mother Nature's Friendly
Bacteria to digest and turn organic wastes into carbon dioxide and water. A good Bacterial
Digestant Treatment will contain enzymes and nutrients to jump start the Bacterial Digestion Process.

4 Groups Of RV Waste Treatments
Be careful of the Treatments you use in your RV Waste Tanks. The EPA has published a report for RV
owners about Safe RV Waste Water which lists several Dangerous Chemicals that should be
avoided.
The University of Arizona also has recommendations and a list of Dangerous Chemicals to Avoid.
Before choosing which RV Waste Treatment, decide if you want to preserve wastes with Dangerous RV Waste Chemicals and cover up
odors. Or, do you want to actually eliminate the cause of the odors with environmentally friendly Bacterial Digestants!
Remember, the primary function of First and second Generation RV Waste Products was to preserve wastes by
retarding or killing bacterial action and mask odors with stronger deodorizer's.
1. Bacterial Digestant RV Waste Treatments
Bacterial Digestants can reduce the
operating costs and time RV owners spend on maintaining their RV Holding Tanks. Save Money by Not Flushing RV
Holding Tanks.
2. RV Waste Chemicals
Most RV Waste Chemicals control RV Holding Tank
odors with chemicals that are dangerous to humans, plants, animals and septic tanks or sewage treatment
facilities receiving RV Waste Water.
3. Enzymatic Products
Enzymatic RV Waste Products use synthetically created Enzymes. Synthetic Enzymes are capable of
breaking down organic matter but cannot multiply and do not eliminate the source causing the problem. They need
beneficial bacteria to digest the organic matter.
Unfortunately, these Enzymatic Treatment Products may also contain fragrances and harsh chemicals. These
chemicals can harm or kill beneficial bacteria, negating the potential benefit of using enzymes.
4. Nutrient Enhancement Products
Nutrient enhancement sounds positive. However, under normal conditions, waste already contains plenty of
material to be broken down into nutrients. That is as long as the natural bacteria are healthy and there is no
nutrient overload.
An oversupply of nutrients entering lakes, rivers and the sea can lead to a significant
decrease in water quality. This decrease in Water Quality can reduce fish productivity and
increase the potential for harmful algae blooms. Nutrient enhancement products are therefore of little benefit.
Don't take a chance with your health. Be Safe.
